Restless Blues

Restless Blues and its sister piece Cry of the Atlantic are from my ‘Wild Atlantic’ series. These are wild pieces for wild weather.

I hope these paintings convey something of the hypnotic movement and swell of the Atlantic. With its rugged coastline, West Cornwall puts on a particularly awesome show of power in the winter. There are few places in the UK that are as exposed to the full fury of the big winter weather systems that roll in off the Atlantic Ocean. Along with the gale force winds come the huge waves that have shaped the Cornish coastline physically and culturally.

It is sobering to remember that the cruel seas off Cornwall do still bring tragedy - even in this day and age. Perhaps the most poignant example in recent history being the Penlee Lifeboat disaster.

Lifeboat crews at St Ives have been saving lives at sea since 1839 and received 33 medals for gallantry. Lifeboat stations have remained operational during the coronavirus pandemic and are continuing to launch to those at peril at sea. RNLI crews and lifeguards across the country have saved over 142,700 lives since 1824.
