In Between
In Between
Series of original oil paintings by St Ives artist Louise Fowler
I began painting this series as the days grew shorter and autumn slid into winter. During Samhain, the ancient Celtic festival from which Halloween originates, the veil between this world and the next is believed to be at its thinnest. The idea of a veil between worlds is referred to by many other names and images. In pagan tradition it is a hedge or a mist where the world of the living and the world of the spirits overlap but are hidden behind a metaphoric veil of perception. During Samhain the world of the spirits is easier to access; the boundary of perceived separation is not as concrete.
